Print out this list of swimming pool home safety rules and give a copy to every member of your household. Make sure that everyone reads and understands these rules. If you have children that are too young to read, discuss this entire list with each of them. Having a home swimming pool is a lot of fun and it's great exercise. But, maintaining a safe swimming pool environment is critically important!

Here are the safety rules:

  1. An adult who can swim must ALWAYS be present before any child can be allowed in the pool.
  2. At least one adult trained in first-aid and CPR must ALWAYS be present when children are swimming.
  3. In case of an emergency, keep a telephone within sight of the swimming pool.
  4. NO running is allowed in the swimming pool area.
  5. If lightning is seen or thunder is heard, using the swimming pool is forbidden.
  6. The swimming pool area must be kept free of clutter.
  7. Every child must be visible to the adult supervisor so large flotation devices are not allowed when children are swimming.
  8. Children who cannot swim must wear a flotation device not only when they are in the water, but also when they are anywhere near the water.
  9. All children who are 8 months and older must be taught to swim.
  10. Diving into the swimming pool is not permitted for children younger than 14 years of age.
  11. Keep pool chemicals safely locked in an area outside of the immediate area of the pool.
  12. Vacuums and other tools used to maintain the pool need to be removed from the pool area prior to use.
  13. If there are no underwater lights, children are not allowed in the pool after dark.
  14. Electrical cords are never allowed near the pool.
  15. Glass and other fragile objects are never allowed in the swimming pool area.
  16. When children are present, remember to ALWAYS keep your Life Saver removable pool fence in place.
